Struggling readers look at reading as a chore or something they have to do. I want them to learn to love books. We work hard daily on filling-in reading skill gaps, but I believe my students really need the opportunity to see the fun in reading too. I try to carve out about 15 minutes of my class each day to enjoy a read aloud to demonstrate to my students that reading can be fun, relaxing, and a great way to escape to a "new world" too. I have found the best way to introduce this to my students is under a no-stress Read Aloud using a high-interest book. I love seeing them smile, laugh, get mad at cliff hangers, and all together enjoy books they never would have read on their own before. I am even more overjoyed when after a great book, a student asks if there is a sequel or other books similar to the one we just read because they just need more.
