In our pandemic-ridden classrooms, flexibility is the new concept for everything we as teachers, parents, and students do everyday. Over the last two years, students have experienced and faced a good number of traumas due to the pandemic and unrelated to it. This trauma has impaired student engagement, attention, and learning. My project focuses on designing my classroom with a trauma-informed & research-based approach to student-focused flexible seating. Flexible seating is a 21st century learning approach with an emphasis on comfort, collaboration, and cooperation. Not only will this flexible seating help my focus-inhibited students (ADHD, Autism, and other needs. ), but would also create a safe/comfortable space for my students with trauma. Below, I will list the research-based articles I have read, promoting flexible seating and trauma-informed approaches that I believe will foster positive engagement, collaboration, comfort, and learning. Research-Based Articles: - "Flexible Seating Impact on Classroom Environment"- Cole, Kassadie; Schroeder, Kaitlin; Bataineh, Mohamed; Al-Bataineh, Ade. 2021 - "Trauma Informed Approaches to Classroom Management"- Brenda Ingram, EdD, LCSW - "Teacher Perceptions on Flexible Seating in the Classroom: Effects on Student Engagement and Student Achievement"- Grimm, Pepper Anne. 2020.
