This grant is written for the purpose of increasing knowledge, passion for learning, and hands-on activities in my 5th grade science classroom. The tools and supplies listed below will create exciting, project-based learning activities for my students this year and for the years to come. Project-based learning provides the students with standards-based knowledge, but even more so, with life-skills to apply outside the classroom. This grant will supply not just one big project; it will also be able to enhance smaller projects that I teach throughout the year. The supplies requested will provide my students with incredible tools they will use while working on hands-on science experiences. The Digital Microscope and slide set will support lessons of the three states of matter. As my class ventures into physical science at the beginning of the year, this microscope will provide hands-on learning. This microscope will be a vital tool while students learn how particles change and move- growing students’ knowledge base. This microscope has an SD card that can allow slides to be projected on the front screen for the entire class to observe. The entire process becomes an interactive, hands-on experience for all students in the class or at home. The microscope will be utilized in all three units taught throughout the year: Physical Science, Life Science, and Earth/Space Science. Next, the mini aquarium will change the way students study Life Science. Students will observe, study and interact with a real ecosystem in our own classroom! This project will be incorporated into everyday conversations while the garden is growing and changing. Animal Cell Model is a hands-on exploration into the inside of animal cells. Students will deepen their understanding while answering questions of cellular makeup and how it is all connected to the body’s function.
