My first book choice, When Stars are Scattered, is a graphic novel choice. Because of the pandemic, the student reading level has been diminished. However, one bright spot is that students have flocked to reading graphic novels. I have chosen this one because it is grade level appropriate, and because it brings attention to a global issue that my students growing up in Oklahoma might otherwise not be exposed to. Because of the pandemic, student interest level on all fronts has taken a hit; I want to change that through reading. By using a new novel like Ghost Boys, its main character takes a current issue in America (racial tension) and relates it to the racial injustice within American history over time. This new piece of literature would be more relatable with my students on two levels. With its modern setting, students would be more apt to draw connections. Additionally, because its main characters are African American, its change in typical demographic will reach a broader group of my students. Relating works from different points in time is also part of our Oklahoma ELA standards. All office supplies included in this Donors Choose are to create hands on projects and manipulatives to go along with the aforementioned book studies. As our students have been inundated with technology because of the pandemic, such projects not only break up the monotony of online learning, but also make for good student collaboration and student investment.
