All of my students have found a love of mystery through reading. We did a novel study over "Body in the Woods" and I had students who made a crime connection chart. It was literally something you would see in a detective's office. It had pins and string connecting each character to potential clues, people, or point of interest. They were determined to catch the killer and solve the case! This was not part of the novel study, however, students were engaged and putting their ideas together to create this board. Other students quickly joined in with their ideas and theories. Students were group chatting one another at night, meeting up at recess, and finding each other in the hallway in between classes to discuss theories. I had non readers reading and engaged! Covid has demanded more material be utilized online, but some students struggle to read a book that is scanned and posted online. This will allow my classroom to have more copies of my novels, allow students who are auditory learners to have headphones/headphone stands (with charging stations built in) to use in the classrooms for online/read aloud novels. Students will also be able to borrow extra copies of the novels to take home to read at their own pace. Covid has affected my students at such a deep level, and these materials will be especially helpful for those students who are quarantined, or on distance learning for a period of time and may not have access to Wifi.
