My students read on varying levels and have a variety of interests. These wonderful young people were struggling readers before the Covid pandemic. Because of the conditions created from this horrible virus, their educational process continues to be disrupted. What was once considered learning gaps could now be classified as learning gulfs. Reading comprehension affects every aspect of their education and Covid continues to push them further and further behind. Donations to this project will enable my students to bridge the Covid learning gulf by increasing independent reading of student level interests and providing opportunities for furthering comprehension. Research shows that reading conferencing assists students in their efforts to become more confident, independent readers. It also allows the teacher to monitor independent reading and can provide formative data regarding a student's progress. Providing a comfortable nook packed with a variety of books will help to increase student engagement and will provide opportunities to grow comprehension skills. This will then begin to undo the learning delays caused by Covid. With these books and furnishings, I will be able to utilize conferencing time to further explore topics like social injustice, cultural diversity, and have meaningful conversations with my students about text that they have selected based on their individual likes.
