Teaching reading is hard in itself, especially harder when teaching a skill through a basal that is outdated. Being a teacher that wants to see all succeed, I love to turn to trade books knowing that my students will enjoy reading them and it may even be a story that some can relate to. Using a trade book is a great way to help students realize that "regular library books" are a good way to learn skills. I love the idea of each student having their own book to use!
