Center time in my Pre-k classroom is a vibrant mass of controlled chaos, and I absolutely love it! My kiddos flock to the center board in complete anticipation of where they will get to go and how they will use their imaginations when they get there. The library center, however, is one of the centers that dulls that excitement a bit. It is my goal to change that with the fulfillment of this project. My library center is stocked full of fun books that kids would love to read if they weren’t predisposed to believing that reading is no fun. I believe a reading loft would bring back that sense of wonder and excitement for new adventures that are awaiting them inside the pages of a great book. This reading loft will serve two important center time areas in my classroom. The top will house my book center and underneath will hold my science center. In addition to the reading loft I am requesting a light panel and manipulatives to boost the learning in my science center. My students are filled with curiosity and a light panel will allow them the opportunity to learn and explore many different topics. Having a darker space under the reading loft will allow the light panel to be bright and make their learning come to life even more. Covid has changed young children’s experiences before they get to school. Parents have used video games and t.v. to keep kiddos busy during the long stretches of time at home, instead of books and more hands on learning. I am hoping that with the funding of this project I can foster a love for reading and a different approach to science that most of these children haven’t discovered yet!
