What if you could encourage your students to dream beyond the subject taught? This is the challenge I have given my students providing them with their very own Genius Hour. Like Google, students are given 20 percent of their time in my classroom to explore their passions. The subject matter is guided by the students’ own individual interests, background knowledge, and curiosity to learn. My job during Genius Hour is to offer suggestions, point them in the right direction, and provide them with a vast array of supplies that range from fabric and clay to green screens and movie applications in order to bring their projects to life. Students spend several weeks researching and creating their projects, and then present their final product to the class. Because this is student driven, all students are actively engaged and highly motivated to learn. I have found that most students want to create some type of video, whether it be using a green screen to create a sports broadcast, tell a story through stop motion animation, or a create a commercial for a product they invented. In order to improve productions of our videos, we need things like a tripod to steady the iPad, lighting to limit the shadows, and supplies to create the subject matter.
