The experience of reading a book together as a class and discussing it is what makes English class unique. Students are able to learn about people and experiences they may not otherwise have the chance to understand. It is always a challenge to narrow my syllabus down to a few titles and decide which books will reach the greatest number of students. Utilizing the lit circle model of reading will give students a chance to have a choice in what they read and a chance to discuss within a small group. This will really encourage more thoughtful discussion. Reading book from a variety of places and people fosters empathy and understanding of the shared human experience.
