My Kindergarten students have a high interest in learning, parent support, and enthusiasm for coming to school. They “crave” knowledge in a way I have not seen before in my past 24 years of teaching. They have strong digital skills but fewer real life experiences due to isolation from the pandemic. Many students were not familiar with basic print and how to manipulate a book. Being able to use small books at appropriate levels for new readers is critical. The predictability, simple words, & engaging text & pictures of easy reader books are just what my students need to help their literacy grow. In addition, students who feel overwhelmed or frustrated with harder text, will be excited to read and need less support. This will help them feel more confidence in themselves and their abilities as they continue to have successful reading opportunities with teacher guidance. I hope to instill a lifelong love of reading with these early experiences.
