Children in early childhood benefit greatly by learning through their play. After being at home and rarely around other children outside of their families, play or the ability to play with other children has been negatively affected. After 20 plus years of experience with this age group I started observing a deficit in social and emotional development and interactive/pretend play. Students simply do not know how to play or even play with each other and do not as often choose to play in centers that have open ended play and exploration with other students. Most of my current class were born in 2017 and were barely 2 or 3 when the pandemic began. During their development, when being around others and hands on learning is key, they have been isolated. They lack both background knowledge of basic concepts such as going to the grocery store, going to the post office, veterinarian clinic, theater, etc. and the social emotional and language tools needed to play interactively with others. These purchases will help encourage students to learn, experience, and practice social and emotional learning through pretend play with others in our dramatic play center. Pretend play also highly encourages language skills and allows children to safely explore the world around them. Through dramatic play students will also get hands on practice of many PreK standards such as retelling, sorting, counting, and alphabet awareness. I expect that with the addition of new and improved play items in the Dramatic Play center and with teacher support, students will be enticed to try playing together and therefore practice social emotional skills as well as exploring Prekindergarten standards. This will also affect other areas of our classroom as students become more comfortable with interacting with each other and experiencing social and emotional learning success!
