Research shows that young children learn best when they are fully engaged in their learning. Working with 18 kindergarteners in a Title 1 school, where funds can be limited, and our students are often economically at a disadvantage, new materials and activities can be hard to come by. The products listed in this grant would allow my students to have more opportunities to learn through hands-on activities. When children have opportunities to physically handle and manipulate objects, it can help them to make an abstract concept become more concrete. It helps them to fully understand the concept they are learning. The materials I have chosen to focus on are literacy skills that promote a hands-on, and collaborative experience. Not only will my students get to use tangible materials, but they also get to work with their classmates. This helps build a strong classroom community. Due to the pandemic limiting how much young children have been able to socialize and collaborate, the need to give my students the opportunity to work together has become even more important. Receiving this grant would provide my class with materials that would achieve both goals, while also helping them to improve their academic skills.
