Numerous studies have shown that reading as little as 6 minutes per day can significantly increase a child’s reading performance, and also that children who read up to 20 minutes per day are exposed to as many as 2 million words per year. Research also shows that a student’s reading level has a direct correlation to the success they can achieve in school across all subjects. In high school, much of the other subjects taught involve various amounts of reading for understanding. A biology class, for example, relies heavily on reading comprehension skills as much as a knowledge of science. In current times, in the midst of a global pandemic, students have not had what educators would consider a normal education since the fall of 2020. Because of the fact that instruction during this time relied heavily on technology, students were not reading in the same amounts as they had previously. This caused them a lack of exposure to print materials. I have seen a significant drop in reading levels and skills which in turn carries over into other classroom subjects. On top of this, most high school students no longer enjoy reading for pleasure. This project aims to create a diverse, high-interest, age-appropriate classroom library. Classroom libraries support reading by providing engaging reading material at various levels in order to motivate students and grow reading levels. It is essential that the library is balanced enough to support the individual needs of students because reading levels vary widely by class. The added benefits of this will include an increase in vocabulary and higher academic achievement, along with raising both their mental and emotional health. Raising reading levels that have been stifled as a result of COVID 19 is crucial to helping close the academic gaps caused by this global pandemic.
