Engaging in mathematical games and hands-on science can encourage students to explore number combinations, place value, patterns, and other important mathematical/scientific concepts. It can also encourage strategic mathematical thinking as students find different strategies for solving problems and deepen their understanding of numbers/number sense. Any time teachers use concrete objects or manipulatives it can create a mind-body connection. This can in turn develop muscle memory and retention. This is helpful at all levels of learning and can be differentiated easily through gameplay and hands-on experiences. Hands-on activities provide a structure and a process for children to engage in problem-solving in order to reach particular goals or objectives. It is very motivating to them, and they also learn through inquiry. Students can often work in groups or pairs. Working with their peers helps improve interpersonal skills (communicating, being a team player, and listening to others' ideas.) I will teach each game explicitly to all students at the beginning of the year. Because STEM activities require active involvement, it can reduce a student's fear of making mistakes and failure. I am hopeful that my students will be more willing to take risks, explore new ideas and strategies, and deepen their understanding of the world around them.
