As we enter year three of living and learning during a pandemic, one thing has become apparent to me. As humans, no matter how old or young, we all crave community. I strive, in my classroom, to create space for community and family to grow. I believe that students learn best when they feel safe and comfortable in their surroundings.
We are all different and we learn differently. I am requesting some floor pillows that will allow some students to move to a new location in the room when working independently. They can also be used for small groups to gather when working together.
I also requested some books. I feel that reading is the key to learning! If students can learn to love reading, their scores will go up in all other academic areas as reading is part of every subject.
The third item I requested was math manipulatives. It is so important for a community of learners to learn together with hands on resources. The learning becomes more concrete when they are able to use all of their senses in the learning process.
All of these items will help to create community and foster deeper learning in my students.
