The materials I have requested will help me in creating more meaningful and exciting centers in my music classroom. I have found that having center time in music class allows my students more time for independent learning and creating their own music. The addition of more percussion instruments will replace some of my classroom instruments which have become worn. These instruments will also provide more opportunities for class ensemble playing. Music learning truly comes alive when a student is a part of the process, when they see themselves as a young musician. Instrument play enlivens the imagination and encourages students’ creativity!
In order to help my students’ learning in this pandemic, I could use more resources to aid in their use of classroom iPads and new writing medias (individual whiteboards, etc.). These resources allow students to create their own music and help me in assessing individual understanding of musical concepts. The pandemic has called on our students to be more independent in their learning. In order to do this, they must have the skills to think through problems and to feel confident in using the software/activities they are asked to use in the learning process. Practicing independent learning skills in class helps students have the resources to learn outside the physical walls of the classroom.
These pandemic times also call on us as teachers to make the most of the time we have in the classroom. In the music classroom that means taking advantage of group learning and performing whenever possible. This is why I am requesting more handheld instruments and center materials for my classroom.
