Allowing students to see themselves represented and having the resources to be authentic is one of the most important gifts a teacher can cultivate. At our school he students are strong, resilient, and like most middle school students, seeking out sources of representation. I teach 8th-grade literature to the coolest kids! In my classroom, I strive to create an inclusive and safe space for all students. One of the most powerful ways to feel seen is through literature and allowing for self-regulation. My 8th-grade students have consistently sought out voices and characters that sound and act like them. Along with wanting to see themselves represented, they cannot fully see this until they are able to center their bodies. Throughout the pandemic, our students did not always have access to the best resources. We are a free and reduced breakfast and lunch school. Access to new books, headphones, lighting, shelves, and wiggle seats will help me fill in those gaps that have been lost. It is important to meet students where they are and have equitable means to do so. By creating an equal playing field, I can help students pursue the deepest academic learning imaginable.
