Third Grade is the grade where they are starting to now read to learn instead of learning how to read. I use to push chapter books to my third graders and while those are still very important to grow them as readers, I was forgetting about the benefits of picture books and being able to read them out loud to them. My goal is to read at least one or two read a loud books each day. Sometimes it will be tied to our objectives, but sometimes it will be just for fun. I loved being able to be read to as a child and being introduced to so many stories and to be honest, I still would love that as an adult. So why wouldn't my third graders love it. It is also a great discussion starter or a way to come together as a class and laugh at a silly character in the book. When I started to do this, I noticed my students grabbing the books I read to them out loud to read again independently and research shows that will build comprehension.
