In all of the downfalls that were brought on by COVID-19, one blessing was it allowed it us to utilize and rely on technology in a whole new way. It made us get out of our comfort zone and learn new methods to get material across to our students. Our school is a small PK-8 school, that has a large population of low income situations. I try to expose students to as many opportunities as possible, in efforts of helping them tap into a career interest in the future. These materials will allow for exposure to a career skill in the classroom. The camcorders will allow my students to learn how to video and use editing techniques for classroom projects and my Superintendent has approved the idea of a student-led news broadcast for our school! There are so many opportunities to get ALL students involved in this process, not just the same select students that always participate. We can have a film crew, editors, anchors, producers, and writers just to name a few. From a daily learning perspective, I feel like with the large amount of technology use and chats/emails, one thing our students miss out on is verbal communication. By using video projects, we can help enhance students' public speaking skills (which is an area easily overlooked in middle school) while still engaging them. Public speaking is a skill that will benefit them the rest of their life and technology is here to stay, so we might as well embrace it, and teach our students how to use it properly.
