In the Utah Library Media Core Standards it says, "Libraries support independent readers by providing a variety of materials for informational and leisure reading. Reading extensively strengthens stamina and broadens students' global perspective. Skilled teacher librarians recognize individual students' interests and needs and provide materials in a variety of formats, genres, and languages, at varied reading levels." With the influx of students coming to Utah from other states and from other countries, not only are we trying to adjust to more students but to a wider spectrum of needs. One of the areas that I am working to address in my student's needs is in providing reading materials for students who have limited English language skills. Our goal for the media center is to provide a space where all of our students are safe and welcome and where they can access the materials they need academically and for developing the love of reading. To keep up with the needs of the increasing numbers of English language learners, we have been purchasing more books that are written in foreign languages and books in English that appeal to high school students but are written with easier vocabulary and now we find that we are nearly out of shelf space. To alleviate some of the need for more shelf space, we have weeded out the books that have not been used in several years but we find ourselves needing more shelf space. We are hoping to be granted this bookcase to house the books that are written in foreign languages. Doing this will give our students a specific place where our students can access the resources they want and need and allow us to continue growing that collection.
