To make our plant science unit more engaging, my students would love more equipment to increase the amount/variety of plants we can grow. Currently, we germinate plants in our small classroom window sill with one tray. Adding grow lights on timers and additional germination stations, students can grow more plants. At the end of the unit, students either take their plants home or plant them in the program’s outdoor garden. This summer we received a donation for a couple raised garden boxes to start an outdoor garden. The outdoor shed will be put on the side of our building next to the garden and can be locked. The composter will teach sustainability. We can take lawn clippings, cafeteria scraps, coffee grinds and recycled paper to produce compost and use it to amend our garden box soil. These materials will enhance and reinforce the academic standards and help overall student well-being. Providing opportunities for students to engage in hands-on, inquiry learning would increase student buy-in and help them learn the standards at a deeper level. In terms of student well-being, we know that breaks in in-person learning is incredibly hard on students, especially when they have little resources or social interactions at home. However, several students took class seedlings and started a summer backyard garden. This experience was extremely rewarding and some entered their vegetables into our county fall free fair. This sparked our interest in creating a school garden students could use without having barriers like cost and space. The garden is a place to unplug and take care of other living things. Students unwind while interacting with the garden, and develop a sense of community and pride as they nurture plants from seed to maturity. Students enjoy consuming the produce they grow either as a class or at home.
