Hearing my students say the words "I can't read" is one of the hardest parts of teaching. We are working on learning the power of "Yet" and replacing "I can't" with "I don't know that yet". By reading growth mindset books and working on replacing negative self talk I hope to help instill in them the power of believing in themselves. My students become instantly engaged when they see a new learning activity on the table, especially when it is presented as a game. Many of my students are working on the most basic reading skills and can easily become bored or discouraged when presented with the same activities day after day. As the special education teacher, I also help classroom teachers come up with reading interventions and provide them with games and activities to help their at risk students.
