My students have varying ranges of abilities. They come to us with gaps in school attendance, knowledge, and the social emotional skills it requires to engage at all levels. These materials will provide the special education department the needed resources to help students gain confidence and build resilience. Too often, our youth in custody population are expected to engage in grade level work, with below grade level skill. This results in frustration and a major lack of self-esteem. We want students to gain skill, yes, but most importantly confidence. Most of the materials will stay at the school, but with multiples of many items we will have the freedom to send home practice materials. Lessons will be taught in the core academic subjects of reading, writing, and math, all the while building the foundation that school is an engaging place where students are finally safe to learn.
