It is important to motivate and engage children in their learning. Manipulatives effectively help encourage kindergarten children to participate in lessons, especially children with differing learning abilities. My teaching primarily focuses on three subjects: English Language Arts (ELA), Math, and Social-Emotional Skills. This project will address both ELA and Math areas of instruction. Development in ELA and Math are crucial for foundational learning. My kindergarten intervention students learn best when tactile manipulatives and multi-sensory materials are incorporated into their instruction. I have been furthering my learning as a teacher by attending a training based on the Science of Reading titled Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS). This professional development is a 2 year - 8 part in-person training that deeply studies reading, spelling, and language skills. In applying what I am learning in the training to my classroom I have become aware of items that would really benefit myself and my students for better instruction. The magnifying glasses, translucent letter builders, tactile letters, alphabet dough stampers, whisper phones, and magnetic letters will be used weekly in ELA lessons in applying new interventions with my students. These items will help my students to identify uppercase and lowercase letters, high-frequency words, letter sounds, and learn how to read! Many of my students also have goals that address foundational Math skills. The number lines, ten frame boards, and hopscotch mats are items that will be used weekly in Math lessons in my intervention small groups. These manipulatives will be utilized in lessons that address skills including rote counting, number identification, numeral comparison, classifying, counting objects, addition, and subtraction. Thank you for your consideration in donating to my project that will directly benefit my Kindergarten intervention students! It is appreciated more than I can put into words!
