Students who attend my counseling sessions need a range of supportive tools and games to address their socioemotional and learning needs. These students are on Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) for social, emotional, and behavioral challenges and many are also English Language Learners (ELLs). Our school is a diverse school in an urban neighborhood. These items will be used to facilitate self-regulation skills, mental health, social skills building, and collaborative learning. Meditation cards, therapy pet cards, a "feelings" pineapple toy, and a breathing ball will help them learn and practice feelings identification and coping strategies with adult guidance. Social skills games, like Mind Your Beeswax and a cooperative dinosaur game, will help them take turns and learn to problem solve in small groups or pairs. A visual timer will help them see how much time they have left in their counseling sessions and facilitate smoother transitions. Because I also conduct socioemotional assessments with these students, the fruit snacks will be a healthy reward for their efforts. The iPad screen protectors will help me protect the iPad that I use for assessment and notetaking purposes. Many of these items directly support student's mental health as they are adjusting to in-person learning again after a stressful year of remote learning and changes last school year due to Covid-19.
