My students need books that they can hold in their hands and follow along in while I read the story outloud.
Reading is an ADVENTURE! My students all read on a kindergarten and 1st grade level. Most of what they are exposed to is lower level text that just isn't interesting anymore to a 12 year old! Last year we started doing a book study daily and learning that we really DO love reading! We have read titles such as: Touching Spirit Bear, Hatchet, Hunger Games, Esperanza Rising, and a few others. This has sparked some amazing conversations with my students.
While they are unable to read grade level text independently, many DO like to follow along while I read, which in turn gives them confidence, as well as increasing their fluency as they are exposed to words continuously on a daily basis.
These books will help to expand my library so that we have more options to choose from. Students will use the books independently during book study. Students may choose to continue reading at home if it is a series that really caught their attention. During distance days, I will have books to send home with the students so that they can follow along and remain engaged even though we are not physically in school.
