Each day our students arrive with a variety of needs that greatly hinder their ability to learn. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, our students are spending more time on devices and less time with their bodies in motion. Students are missing out on rich sensory experiences and opportunities to explore with their five senses. As a result, we are seeing an increased need for sensory and gross motor experiences. Research shows that extended periods of time and reading on a device are changing the pathways of the brain. As a consequence, we are seeing an increase in a child's ability to regulate their bodies and emotions. Screen time is on the rise while gross motor skills are on the decline. The materials requested will create a sensory rich space for our students to develop their gross motor skills. Providing this area for our students will allow them to receive the sensory input they need to allow their brain to return to learning. This space will also allow students to increase their gross motor skills through a variety of exercises. This space will be available to students as needed throughout the day to give their brains and bodies an outlet. It will also be a great resource for us in the winter months when our gross motor time outdoors is limited due to weather. Our goal is to help our students reach their maximum learning potential and research shows that physical activity helps build academic focus and concentration.
