I try to create an environment that is student-focused, where I am there to guide them as needed, but I am not just standing at the front lecturing them. I love to have supplies like markers, pens, binders, and clipboards available for students to use as they are creating math. In my Math 2 classes, I am constantly looking for ways to help students engage more. Math isn't always their favorite topic, so the more interactive I can make it, the more willing they are to engage in learning. The dry erase markers and sleeves will be used to help make new content more approachable to students through guided templates. The dry erase templates help students to be more willing to engage and try the math on their own, especially when we are working on difficult topics like the quadratic formula. The geometric shapes will be used to help students visualize concepts like cross sections. We use clipboards as we collect data as we study statistics. I also primarily use the sticker books and stickers with my Math 2 students. Test days cause many of them high levels of anxiety, and after they complete their tests, they use the sticker books to wind down and relax again. I have found that even high school students love stickers. The colored pens and dividers are used with my AP Calculus students. We create our own textbooks every year, and add to them as we build their knowledge of calculus. Students check and correct their work with the colored pens, which helps them build a stronger connection to their calculus. All these supplies will help me create a more engaging classroom so that students can overcome the challenges that COVID-19 has brought to us all.
