Meeting all the individual needs in a self-contained classroom can be challenging sometimes. It is important to have a variety of math and phonics (reading) manipulatives, puzzles, and books. Having a variety of manipulatives provides my students the ability to engage in learning that meets their needs and helps them to be successful. As a classroom, we are always working on writing our names and simple sentences which is an OT IEP goal most of my students have. My students benefit from visual schedules and daily routines. Because we use our visual schedules daily, I like to laminate them so they last longer. In the whole group daily, we have calendar, weather, counting, and a read-aloud with an activity. As a Learning Lab teacher meeting, the needs of all my students means also meeting their sensory needs as well as their learning needs.
