My students are getting their first taste of school as is the case for all preschool children. The difference this year is that most of these kids ages 3-5 are experiencing their first interactions outside of their immediate family. Due to the pandemic and the quarantines and other factors relating to Covid-19, these students have been kept at home and haven't had very much interaction with peers let alone other adults. The social emotional struggles I have seen in my students this year, far outweigh what I have seen in the seven years I have been in preschool. I know how valuable preschool is in a child's development. The majority of their early learning takes place in these valuable years and will set them up for future success in their elementary years and beyond. With the items I am requesting, I will be able to make a safe area for them to sit with the sofa and on the tiles and feel comfortable while they work through their social emotional struggles. A place where I can go meet with them to discuss helpful methods and implement positive learning. It also provides a choice for them. With the dolls I requested I will be able to make sure all my students feel represented in their learning environment. They gain a lot of skills through purposeful play in the classroom and my hope is that they feel equally valued and important. Likewise the puppets I am requesting will help with role play when my students do not feel comfortable talking about their own feelings. It gives them an outlet that feels less vulnerable. Please help me give my students the skills they need to come back from the setbacks they have already experienced during this pandemic.
