As a special education classroom teacher, my students face numerous learning challenges. In order to provide an optimal learning environment, I need to incorporate flexible seating into my special education classroom. Students feel empowered when they have some choice in their learning environment. Flexible seating allows students to choose where they work and with whom they are in close proximity with. Flexible seating will allow my students with learning challenges to wobble, rock, bounce, lean or stand while learning. Movement increases blood flow and oxygen to the brain and physical activity has been linked to higher performance. When students are uncomfortable they are less productive. Flexible seating will allow students to become comfortable as they tackle difficult learning tasks. Dealing with the COVID-19 Pandemic has been difficult for all students but specifically for my rural district; the impact has been significant. Many students do not live in traditional home settings and deal with generational impacts of the COVID-19 virus. In addition, our rural setting has limited some students' ability to participate in digital learning. My students not only face learning challenges through personal individualities but are truly limited by their accessibility to distance learning. My students are playing catch-up and deserve a comfortable place to learn. The target population for my flexible seating would be my special education students in grades 6-12 who are in my classroom daily. In addition, my flexible seating will service the middle school and high school population that come to my room for additional services, modifications and/or resources.
