Sensory activities facilitate exploration and naturally encourage children to use scientific processes while they play, create, investigate and explore. To help my students learn amid the pandemic I could use these sensory materials for lessons to help my students process different sensory information, in turn helping their brain to create stronger connections to process and respond to sensory information. Research shows that sensory play builds nerve connections in the brain’s pathways, which lead to the child’s ability to complete more complex learning tasks. To make an upcoming unit more engaging, my students would love to use these learning opportunities in my classroom as self-regulation tools, which can help decrease frustration and anxiety, but, increase attention and focus! My resource time is limited in the classroom, so being efficient is very important. These writing tablets are easier to use than dry erase boards and create less frustration for my special needs students. They can use them to provide quick answers and are used as a multi-sensory tool for some students that require fidgets. Distance learning has been a real struggle for all of them since the pandemic began. My students have difficulty navigating online activities from their classroom teachers and turning in assignments on their own. Most receive hard copy packets to complete at home due to lack of internet in our rural area. They need a lot of guidance and support in the classroom and now that we are learning from home at times during this school year they need even more help. To bring my dream learning activity to life, these many sensory learning materials that I have selected will give help to my students, and advance their academic learning overall. Relax, Relate and Release - are the 3R's needed in an educational setting for today's students to achieve.
