The resources I am requesting are books with themes of perseverance, hope, and empathy. Rekindling a love of reading and appreciation of literature is my goal. I know that reading for pleasure not only develops their reading comprehension, critical thinking, and writing skills, but, reading opens up the world to students who may not have had the opportunity yet to explore different cultures and meet people from diverse backgrounds. Reading teaches us about life while providing temporary relief from reality. Part of the requested resources will provide whole-class book studies featuring high-interest books based on real events meant to teach perseverance and empathy to provide hope for the future. Students will be able to interact with these stories and discuss them with their peers as readers do in the “real world” and apply the ideas presented to their own lives with the understanding that others have faced major challenges and have found a way to persevere and so can they. Besides whole-class reading, my students also participate in their own Book Clubs, small groups who choose to read the same book and meet to discuss the book; the other resources that I’m requesting will provide more choices for this type of reading experience. Book Club offers students a more intimate setting to openly discuss their book, choice in their group and their book, a offers students multiple opportunities to practice skills like active listening and appropriate verbal debate in a safe space. Our students didn’t get enough of this sort of face-to-face interaction before Covid-19 and they need these opportunities even more after the isolation caused by the pandemic. This project will provide my students with high-interest books (both fiction and nonfiction) about individuals from diverse backgrounds who face challenges and tragedies, but survive through persistence and hope.
