Students and adults often stop reading for entertainment around 3rd grade. This causes stagnation in reading level. In my 6th-grade class, students often choose books that have a 2nd-3rd grade reading level. This is due to a lack of emphasis on reading for entertainment once reading for testing becomes the main academic concern. My goal is to provide students with entertaining books to complete academic work and to expand upon previous learning. I strive to find books that can be used as extensions for science, geography, and math lessons. My class has a goal of reading 40 books in a year. At first, it can be difficult to get students started, but students often read past their 40-book goal by the end of the year, simply because they are enjoying what they are reading! This increases test scores because as we know, the best way to improve reading skills is independent reading. By making reading something kids choose to do, we are setting them up for a lifetime of academic progress.
