As we transition into a more technologically-versed world, there is still and always will be a need for hard copies of books. This is especially true in my classroom where we practice reading every single day. At the beginning of each class period, I hold reading conferences with my students. This is an opportunity they have to tell me about what they are reading and the things they have noticed in their books. There are no assignments or tests attached to this, therefore they do not feel a pressure to get a book finished by a certain time or worried that they may not pass an assessment because of it. This has developed students into readers who actually want to read for their benefit and pleasure. Therefore, I am wishing for classroom library books along with a comfortable and inviting seating area to continue in my efforts to promote independent reading and conferencing. This project will benefit any and all students who walk through my classroom door. Because I am requesting books of all types, such as fictional novels, graphic novels, and nonfiction, there will be a variety that students can choose from. This will also benefit my future students so that this can have a continuing impact. COVID-19 has interrupted learning tremendously. Although we seem to have new high-tech and advanced solutions to recent issues, there is still a need for books to be in students’ hands. Although there aren’t tests tied to my reading conferences, there are still standardized tests and benchmarks that students will inevitably have to do, and reading daily can prepare them in the areas of vocabulary, comprehension, and inferential thinking.
