The use of flexible seating as well as new and exciting materials in the classroom will help students to stay better engaged during instructional time. By creating a welcoming learning environment in my classroom, students will feel more comfortable and confident facing tasks that are difficult or unknown to them.
Students are unique, and our instruction of new material should reflect that by focusing on their individual needs and goals. Providing students with a variety of work options (whiteboard vs. Boogie Board) as well as flexible seating (balance stools and chair cushions) will allow them to feel like the classroom is a safe place to try their best even if they end up making mistakes.
Because the students I work with all have some sort of disability affecting their education, differentiated types of instruction are necessary and most effective. Providing them with different options and ways to access their education will help them to become successful as they move through their academic career. Things such as flexible seating and light covers make this process easier for students who struggle staying focused and engaged during class time. It also helps to ease some of the stress that can occur in students from being in a classroom and working on difficult tasks they are unfamiliar with.
