A 3D printer will allow my students to bridge the gap between virtual art and physical art in the round. By taking artwork conceived and rendered in a virtual computer environment and printing the artwork into the physical world, the student is able to create a new kind of 3D artwork. After the plastic sculpture is finished, it can be coated in plaster and cast in aluminum or bronze. The technology to take an idea, render it on a computer, 3D print the physical artwork and then cast that artwork into its final metallic medium, will help my students take centuries-old casting techniques and bring them into the modern world. The 3D printer will help my students create exciting new sculptural art forms and incorporate them into the future. The 3D printer will also help students who have more practical ideas. The ability to 3D render an obsolete part of an old machine and reproduce it in aluminum or brass would be a very valuable asset to have for a young mechanic or engineer.
