Our population of students is growing more diverse year after year; however, our curriculum is not. Many of the books we read in Language Arts are by White, male authors, and it's challenging for many of my students to relate to these authors and stories. I believe it's important that students are exposed to other cultures but also that they are able to see themselves in the literature they read, and I believe The House on Mango Street would help our Latinx students, my school's greatest minority population, to see more of themselves in our classroom. This novel also has an excellent Spanish translation that would help my English Learner students be able to read the same book as their peers and increase their confidence and competency. I'm excited to bring diversity into my classroom.
