The effects of COVID-19 have been felt around the world. Many students have suffered greatly due to the pandemic. Students need social-emotional learning to receive the necessary skills to succeed in school and life. I want my students to learn how to understand and regulate their emotions and feelings at home and in the classroom. Students must learn how to regulate emotions before they can focus their attention on academics. Many of the items requested in my DonorsChoose projects will go toward a classroom "Peace Corner". In our class, students learn skills to identify and regulate their emotions. The resources provided by this project will allow students a comfortable place in the classroom to practice those skills when they are frustrated, sad, overwhelmed, etc. To support students and reinforce good choices and positive behaviors items also purchased will be used for incentives. Some of those incentives will be prizes, and others incentives will be games they can play when free time is earned to support them at school. My students are eager to learn, but many have fallen behind due to events related to COVID-19. The social and emotional resources and books provided in this project will be used for whole-class lessons and small groups as I see fit. Helping students process their emotions and learn to self-regulate will help them be more ready to learn. I will also have some of the items in a peace area for students who need some time and space to regroup, work through emotions so they can come back focused and ready to learn. I know this will truly impact their education.
