Oklahoma revised the state standards and seventh grade got an overhaul. These materials would go a long way in helping us teach these standards that are new to us. About a third of our school year will be spent on ecology. Ecology can be exciting but it’s different from biology or chemistry in that lab activities require more creativity from the educator. Biology has specimens that can be studied and chemistry has reactions that can be observed. Ecology focuses on the relationships between organisms and their environment. We tend to take those relationships and processes for granted because they happen constantly around us. Most students have never consciously thought about the nitrogen cycle and how it can affect the soil which in turn affects the food they eat. The requested materials would really help expose students to ecology and how it impacts their daily lives. We will learn about food chains and food webs, factors that affect population growth, symbiotic relationships, biomes, and the elements and cycles that are important to Earth’s life processes. These resources would help provide students with different experiences and real life examples of the topics we will study. My goal is to help students understand the natural world around them and appreciate all it has to offer. In the past few years due to Covid, we have had to really limit hands-on activities and in-person labs. We had to switch to doing lab demonstrations and virtual labs. If Covid were to flare up again and we had to do distance learning, we would still be able to use these materials in other ways by doing demonstrations via Google Meet or converting them to digital versions where the whole class can participate on Google Slides.
