Many of my students are Special Education students but they don't necessarily see themselves as special. I want to create a learning environment for them that is beautiful with some plants and a nice chair but that is also able to meet their needs. By allowing them access to their favorite books and allowing a space for them to charge their devices. I am hoping to create a space where they can step away from their devices, while they charge, grab an engaging book and connect with each other and all the things I want to teach them. I want my Special Education students to feel like their classroom is special! A place where other students wish they could be. A place they are not ashamed or embarrassed to enter into. We currently have a class plant named Palmer that we love and that is slowly outgrowing her pot. I have noticed that the addition of some plant life in our classroom makes the environment more relaxed and nurturing. I think an addition of a few succulent plants will add to that atmosphere and maybe encourage them to leave their phones or devices that are a distraction on the new charger, willingly, and enter into a beautiful space of learning. I'm excited to have this space and the tools necessary to facilitate positive social interactions, engaging learning opportunities, and a safe haven for them to learn at their own pace. If there is anything that I've learned from teaching Special Education the last 10 years it's that students need to have safe places where they know they have access to books, food, chargers, and most importantly love. When those needs are met there is very little that stands between them and the learning. Something Special truly takes place!
