Our K-6th grade resource room is full of students with all kinds of struggles. They need wins to help them see their potential and ability. Two ways they can gain the confidence they need are by using manipulatives in the classroom and having access to flexible seating. Manipulatives make academic concepts more accessible for special education students. Having the opportunity to use hands-on activities to learn concepts makes a huge difference in the learning of a special needs student. Many of the students in this classroom struggle with anxiety and fear, using manipulatives to learn makes for a fun and engaging environment where these students can feel comfortable and safe. For our special education resource classroom, flexible seating is very important. Many of our students need movement as they work, flexible seating and fidgets allow students to move around the classroom, work, and communicate openly and collaboratively while fostering creativity and a space where they feel safe.
