Most first grade students enter the year with some knowledge of how and why we sit still, line up, put things in place, and play nicely but allow others their personal space. This year has been unique because, for most of them, this is their first real experience with these things. Many of these young students did not get the benefit of attending an in-person class last year. Learning all of these skills, along with the educational curriculum can be a bit overwhelming and can cause some of them anxiety. I encourage group work and play. At this time, my groups are allowed to only sit where everyone in the group can comfortably work. They will often sit on yoga mat squares with clip boards or laying on the rug with clip boards. I have noticed that when they are allowed to move around a little, they almost all are more focused and engaged with each other. Offering flexible seating allows the students the flexibility to do what is going to work for them. Having a place to sit comfortably with other students helps them to engage with those around them. Being able to use a lap desk while someone else in the group uses a floor cushion allows all of them an option to join the group with. I want my students to be able to engage in their learning and benefit from peer groups. I also encourage my students to stay organized. We have places for our books and bags and even an iPad cart with chargers. We do not, however, have a mail box center for the students to use. I want them to have a special place to put their work every day. This will help them be responsible to keep track of what goes home.
