I have seen multiple young students decrease or stop their physical activity altogether for various reasons during the COVID-19 pandemic. My project is to increase participation and to give students access to new sports and activities to promote lifelong engagement. With the recent surge in popularity of Pickleball, I wish to add this sport to lessons. It could be a lifetime activity to promote health-related fitness for students. I also wish to further enhance the students' ability to research sports and activities from other cultures within lessons. Adding a cricket set allows students to learn about the sport which is popular around the world but is not well known in the US. Participation in sports leads to healthier students. Not only does it improve well-being but studies have show high school athletes have higher G.P.As, score higher on standardized testing, and have better attendance records. Once our students approach graduation, attending a gym is often one of the only ways that they can keep fit. Gyms can be intimidating places for young people who are joining them. Our current weight room has no free weights although these are common in all gyms. I would like to add free weights in order to demonstrate proper lifting techniques and movement patterns for alternative exercises not using barbells. The workout dice will allow for a fun method of working on calisthenics that students could replicate at any time and in any place. Finally, we have a high proportion of student athletes at the school. These students are at higher risk of sustaining injuries through their activities. I wish to boost the students knowledge of active and passive recovery as well as injury prevention. Having the recovery massage equipment is an easy way to demonstrate to students how they can perform active recovery.
