One of my main goals as a physical educator is to help students find physical activities they enjoy. Studies show when students enjoy the physical activity they are more likely to engage in physical activity in the future. The requested resources would allow me to provide my students with the opportunity to experience new non-traditional physical activities. The resources include equipment to play a game called "Kanjam" and "Spikeball". These games are not well known and will provide students an opportunity to discover new ways to stay active in the class and in the future.
Each piece of requested equipment will encourage students to practice effective teamwork and positive communication skills. Both Kanjam and spikeball require two students to work together in teams of 2-3 to communicate and move strategically to score a point. Due to the pandemic, many students have had fewer opportunities to physically work together with their peers and develop these skills. In addition, many students may be suffering from increased mental health struggles. It is well known increased physical activity may support students' mental wellbeing. Therefore, I believe introducing students to new non-traditional physical activities may increase their amount of current and future physical activity benefiting student physical and social-emotional health.
