Many of my students' already struggling families have been economically impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. They don't have funds to purchase books for themselves, and many of them don't have easy access to a public library. Our school library is good, but doesn't always have the titles my students are looking for. I'd like to use these books by giving students access to check them out and read them at home. The book options for my Spanish-speaking students are even less. I've chosen to purchase Spanish editions of many staple young adult books, like The Fault in Our Stars and Harry Potter, so that these students can have more access to a variety of literature, same as their non-Hispanic classmates. The ultimate goal is to increase the literacy of all my students, and to help them make up for what they may have lost throughout the pandemic.
