Speech and language therapy can involve a lot of repetitive practice and drilling. Many of my students, especially my middle school students, lack motivation and attention very quickly. Therefore, I use a variety of methods to help my students become motivated to learn and reach their goals. My students learn and master concepts much better when multimodal learning is used, involving visual, auditory, and kinesthetic senses. I see much better motivation and performance in my students when my speech therapy activities involve technology and multi-sensory materials. Since the COVID-19 pandemic shut down, I have discovered many valuable technology resources that I wouldn’t have known otherwise. Many apps developed for speech and language have a recording and play back function embedded that is extremely useful for articulation therapy. Youtube videos, games, and activities developed by other professionals on Boom Learning and Teachers pay Teachers highly encourage my student’s participation and motivation. I love that many of these materials are designed in an evidence based manner that greatly fosters learning. My students currently participate in these speech therapy activities using my school-provided laptop that is fairly old and very slow in performance. Some of my students who are physically challenged have a difficult time controlling the mouse pad with two hands and navigating the screen. Having an ipad would benefit my students so they can navigate these wonderful resources more smoothly and learn more effectively. My goal is to be able to build up a collection of fun, engaging, and effective digital resources!
