Research tells us that students become better writers themselves as they examine professional writers' rhetorical decisions in a text. My writing students will select an different author to explore from this collection (based upon the student's interest in history, economy, literature, and politics). Students will examine the rhetorical situation and appeals, understand organization strategies, and rhetorical techniques within their text in order to prepare to write their own reflective essays (English 1010) and short memoirs (English 2010). Each student will use Post-It notes to "mark" the text and then transfer key ideas to large Post-It notes to share with the entire class.
