The COVID-19 pandemic has created learning gaps as well as increased mental health struggles for many students. Perhaps the best way to tackle both the social-emotional and academic challenges of the pandemic is through reading. Novels have the potential to broaden students' horizons, teach critical thinking skills, expand vocabulary, and instill a sense of belonging. With these book sets, students can be individually engaged in their learning and have access to reading from home. This is absolutely crucial in the age of COVID-19, as absences have increased due to isolation/quarantine requirements and a shift in norms. Having enough copies of the class novel makes it possible for students to stay caught up regardless of their situation. Both novels requested, Breaking Through by Francisco Jiménez and Restart by Gordon Korman, teach relevant themes such as perseverance, forgiveness, change, and the power of positive relationships. As students analyze and relate to the characters in these books, they will find strength to face the diverse challenges in their own lives.
